For five years, I worked closely with the Director of The Hewlett Foundation’s Family & Community Development Program as a Program Consultant. I conducted extensive best practices research on a prospective new workforce development grant making initiative and partnered with the Program Director to design and implement the new initiative. Implementation involved writing detailed Requests For Proposals and leading workshops clarifying the foundation’s intent for the new grants program. I also evaluated dozens of grant proposals each quarter for applicant fit with the foundation’s priorities, as well as the proposed program’s feasibility and the applicant’s organizational capacity. Over the five years, I recommended approximately $15M in grants to Bay Area nonprofits.
As a final activity, I helped hire and oversaw the work of an evaluation firm conducting an external evaluation of nine grantees in the new grants program. This involved working with two technical assistance providers to the pool of grantees involved in the evaluation.
